Thank you to SchoolHouse Connection for leading the way in reintroducing HEASHFY in the House and Senate! To learn more about this legislation, visit SchoolHouse Connection’s HEASHFY page.

On May 7, 2024, the bipartisan and bicameral Higher Education Access and Success for Homeless and Foster Youth Act (HEASHFY) (S.4270 / H.R.8273) was reintroduced by U.S. Senators Patty Murray (D-WA) and Mike Braun (R-IN), and U.S. Representatives Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D-CA-37) and Erin Houchin (R-IN-09).

HEASHFY will remove barriers for homeless and foster youth pursuing higher education and support them as they apply to, enroll in, and complete college by:

  • Dedicating resources to identify and support homeless and foster youth who are applying to and enrolled in college;
  • Helping homeless and foster youth access on-campus housing year-round;
  • Ensuring homeless and foster youth are prioritized for Federal Work Study opportunities;
  • Offering in-state tuition rates for students without stable residency; and
  • Improving data collection and reporting.

Education has a powerful role to play in preventing and ending youth and young adult homelessness. We are proud to support this legislation alongside over 40 other organizations.
