On December 20, 2013 the U.S. House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee released a draft proposal to prevent child sex trafficking and improve the lives of youth in foster care. Read more on this effort on their website.

The committee accepted comments from the public and the National Network for Youth submitted a letter to the committee.  Our letter emphasized the following:

  1. It is important for youth in foster care to have the opportunity to participate in developmentally appropriate social activities with their peers.
  2. Increasing access to housing is necessary to end domestic human trafficking.
  3. The committee should not just focus on sex trafficking, but should also include labor trafficking.
  4. Child welfare should collect data about where young people live after they run away from or go missing from any foster care placement, including kinship care.
