ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A new study shows Alaska’s homeless youth facing high levels of abuse and sexual assault.

The Youth in Crisis report by Covenant House says 46 percent of Alaska’s youth are victims of sexual assault. The study also found that 75 percent of homeless youth are unemployed. In the past decade, the number of youth moving to Anchorage from rural Alaska has doubled.

Covenant House officials say teens arrive in Anchorage looking for opportunities, but find it even more difficult to survive.

“And I think we need to educate our fellow Alaskans about this need, because it’s really a need that people don’t see in their day-to-day lives,” said the group’s Deirdre Cronin.

The University of Alaska Anchorage and its Institute of Social and Economic Research worked with Covenant House to produce the report.
