Joseph left home when he was 13. He explained that he left because there were few resources to take care of the needs of his large family. “It was just that my mom couldn’t take care of all of us. I have 3 brothers and 3 sisters.”

He alternated between staying with friends, family, and foster care.

Q:
Have you ever lived on the streets, before or after you found YouthCare?

A:
No, I never had to live on the streets.

Q:
What was the hardest thing about that transition period from 13 when you moved out, until here?

A:
The hardest thing was maintaining a job, and school, and housing.

Q:
How did you hear about YouthCare?

A:
I didn’t hear about YouthCare, I was in the hospital because I was sick. I got sick wall I was staying in a shelter and I ended up in a hospital one night, and ah, some buddy called a social worker, and ah, she talked about some options, she was going to release me and find me a place to go, and I went to Denny Shelter for a while. I was staying there close to down town. Debra Boyer: she heard about me and got me into the program.

Q:
How did she hear about you?

A:
I guess she heard about me, and when I was in the hospital. I got bit by some kind of insect or something.

What mental heath problems did you have?

A:
I have sc_________ disorder and, well, it’s not relay sivear but the medication helps.

Services are pretty limited for a person who is my age, or, before I turned 18. but I probly would have been out looking for a job. Trying to support myself, find a place to live, something like that.

Which program do you feel has helped you the most?

A:
I would have to say that both have helped me I both have gotten me here.

Q:
How have they helped? School…

A:
Yeah, with school and there are so many different services and stuff.

Q:
Pick one YouthCare staff member that has helped you the most, and then talk about how they helped you.

A:
It would be Curtis

Q:
Why?

A:
He has just always helped me find services, he has worked with me on a lot of goals with school and everything. We talk about life, and all my problems.

Q:
What going are you looking forward to now?
