Charessa left home when she was 9 years old. Not enough money, my family couldn’t provide for 3 so one of us had to go, and that was me, so I left and ended up on YouthCares doorstep.

Q:
Were you living on the streets at anytime?
A:
Off and on for about 7 or 8 years.
Q:
How old were you when you left?
A:
The fist time I was about 9, then back and forth between shelters and group homes and foster homes.
Q:
What was the hardest thing about living on the street?
A:
Everything I hard, cause you don’t know where you going to go, where foods going t0o come from, where you going to sleep. It’s always cold. So there’s nothing really specifically that wasn’t ok.
Q:
How did you hear YouthCare?
A:
Friends at the Orion Center.
Q:
What goals are you working towards right now?
A:
My AA, and getting a good berista job.
Q:
How did you like that program?
A:
I loved it; free coffee.
Q:
How has YouthCare helped you?
A:
It gave me a place to stay, skills. Anyone can walk into a Starbucks and apply for a position or an internship, but we were taught customer service and how to create a good resume. There is a lot of opportunity here: school…
Q:
Where do you think you’d be if you hadn’t gotten into YouthCare?
A:
Homeless. No, um, I don’t know, I probably would be here, and I probably wouldn’t be alive honestly, because out there I did a lot of drugs and I was moving to fast and youthCare let me live in a 1.3 million dollar home, and is paying for my school. It gave me a lot.
Q:
What YouthCare program would you say has helped you the most?
A:
The Orion Center. The staff that worked there, I mean, there not open 24/7, but they are there when you need them. They do everything; they listen, they give you crap, advice, their just there for you.
Q:
If you had to pick one of the YouthCare staff that has helped you the most, who would it be?
A:
I can’t pick one, because they have all contributed to where I’m at now.
Q:
What goals are you looking forward accomplishing in the future?
A:
I’d like to work at the Orion Center. I love that place, that’s my home it’s where my hart is. Also going into my next year of AA
Q:
How about in 5 years, where would you like to be?
A:
I want to open a bookstore, I love books, most of the books I’ve got now, I gotten from the Orion Center, from YouthCare and I want that. I have little aspirations and dreams I want for that bookstore. And that’s what I want in 5 years.
